A Brief History

Internationally known as the Panama Hat due to the historic trade route that reached its peak during the construction of the Panama Canal, this iconic hat has its true origin in Ecuador and represents one of the country’s most distinguished forms of craftsmanship.

Its creation is the result of a fully manual process that begins with the cultivation of toquilla straw in the coastal regions of Ecuador. The fiber then undergoes delicate traditional processes of selection, washing, and bleaching, before being transformed by the skilled hands of artisans from both the Coast and the Andean highlands. These masters preserve and pass down this ancestral knowledge from generation to generation.

In recognition of its exceptional cultural value and the mastery involved in its craftsmanship, traditional toquilla straw weaving was inscribed by UNESCO in 2012 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
